A yellow sub shop concept that turned green and made green……..

This blog is written for Sub shop newbies who ask a lot of questions about the Sub sandwich concept and do not have the answers and do not want to do the basic research. I suggest you go browse their website too, for an update on what is happening today. My other blogs on this website cover many topics such as “how much money can a Sub shop franchisee make”. I can answer that and many other related questions separately when you sign up for one of my Consulting services. Let the story begin……………

  • This well known Franchisor is over 40 years old and was founded by in 1965; it started franchising in about 1973. It is now the largest franchise system in the world with over 31,000 stores and growing by about 50 a week. It has its tentacles in over 86 countries, and is ranked # 1 in the Sandwich category, by Enterpreneur magazine 16 years out of 20. Quite a feat and an incredible success story now being repeated across the globe with varying degrees of success
  • The franchise has expanded through an innovative system of partners called Development Agents(DA’s), who are independent contractors responsible for ongoing development in their designated territory as well as maintaining Franchisor quality standards and enforcing rules and regulations. This is the franchisee’s first point of contact at a local level and is generally where all problems emanate and are rectified or somehow dealt with.
  • We all know by now that it is a simple operation that uses fresh ingredients and is perceived to be a healthy alternative to the burger and fries, greasy style of eating. Their menu has expanded to include wraps, soups, pizza, and toasted subs in response to the fading Quizno’s phenomenon. It is possible in some circumstances to co-brand with a complimentary concept, and to offer Breakfast items and coffee
  • In order to be an approved franchisee, after passing through the local DA interview process, you must attend training in Connecticut for 2 weeks and pass it. You will then get a Training manual, and an Operations manual for reference and immediate support. Thereafter you must refer to the DA office staff who help solve some problems and evaluate your store every month offering guidance in order to maintain quality standards. They also offer assistance with site selection, leasing, store design, construction and equipment ordering and opening support. They are very powerful so maintain good relations !
  • All food is purchased through an approved food distributor; markups are locally negotiated and there is an Independent Purchasing Co-op that negotiates National food and paper product pricing for the benefit of all franchisees with annual dividends issued. Most areas also have local food councils made up of franchisees addressing local requirements and quality control matters.
  • Royalties are 8% and Advertising fees are 4.5% of Sales, taken out of your bank account every week. Weekly paperwork is due every Thursday morning, usually done electronically. The Franchisee Advertising Fund(FAF) is made up of Franchisees and decides on all advertising matters relating to what promotions to have and when, and what Ad agency to use and how often to be on TV, Radio, etc
  • The franchisor negotiates the lease and signs the Master lease, giving the franchisee the Sub-lease, while maintaing full power and control of the location. There is NO AREA EXCLUSIVITY and PROTECTION and they can open a store where they want. That is one reason why we have over 20,000 stores in North America and a thriving resale market and many multi-unit owners
  • In most territories, when you apply for a franchise you will need to show a substantial amount of cash and net worth to the DA office, take the Math and English proficiency test, present a Business plan and pass an interview to demonstrate what a great franchisee you will be. Most new franchise opportunities are reserved for existing franchisees, so the best bet for newbies is to buy a resale.
That is my short version of this success story; if you need help with the Business plan, or with an evaluation of an existing resale opportunity, you must sign up for one of my services and e mail me your specific request for assistance. I have 22 years experience with this Franchisor and can help you with answers to most questions.
